Schuylkill Chamber joins energy buying pool

(Pottsville) -- A third midstate chamber of commerce has signed onto an energy buying pool designed to help offset the end of PPL's rate caps next year.

The Schuylkill Chamber of Commerce has joined 10 other chambers including the Carlisle and West Shore organizations in the consortium. The goal is to buy electricity in bulk to help offset an expected 25 to 40 percent increase in rates come the first of the year. Robert Carl Junior -- the executive director of the Schuylkill Chamber -- says there's a lot of urgency on the part of businesses to take a proactive approach.

Carl says about 190 out nearly 800 members have signed on and when combined with the nine other chambers, the effort will likely make up the largest energy-buying pool in the state. He adds the organization is already working on a second and third energy pool for those businesses that missed the opportunity.
