The 10 Best Things About Summer

Written by Savannah Marie, Community Blogger | May 27, 2014 8:59 AM

Winter was undeniably cold and long. Thankfully, we’ve reached the light at the end of the tunnel. With spring upon us and summer right around the corner, I can’t wait to experience some of the things that make summer so wonderful. There are, of course, more than ten things I love about the season, but these things ranked in my top ten:

1. Beach Time

With every summer comes the need to hop in the car and head to the shore. I finally get to whip out my oversized shades, throw a blanket on the sand and chill the heck out. The sound of the ocean (in which I can actually swim without freezing to death! Hallelujah!) calms me, erasing the misery I’ve sustained by enduring so many beach-less months in the winter cold.

2. Pool Parties

Who doesn’t love pool parties? Whether you’re chilling out with family or friends, pool parties are great. They’re warm, fun and don’t require hours of primping. You go, you socialize and you cannonball into the water when you get too hot. What’s not to like?

3. Grilling and Picnics

During the summer, I don’t need to go out to a restaurant to get away from my dining norms. On the contrary, all I have to do is pack up my food, head out to my backyard, pull off the patio furniture covers and get to grilling. Local parks offer great picnic settings as well, often providing grills and tables for convenience. What tastes better than food off the grill?

4. Outdoor Greenery

Everything is so lush during the summer. Sure, lots of the spring flowers have bloomed and passed, but the green grass and surroundings remain throughout the season. It’s the best respite after seeing everything dead for the entirety of the winter.

5. Sidewalk Foot Traffic

Much like myself, the people of Harrisburg seem to hide indoors during the winter months. Come summer, though, men, women and children are out frolicking in their lawns, walking their dogs and pushing infants in strollers. The pavement is covered with friends and families enjoying the warmth. It’s great to see people out being active and to hear the laughter and conversation bouncing around my neighborhood.

6. Cold Beverages

As a huge fan of iced coffee and frozen chai lattes, I have no beef ordering these over their hotter counterparts. Toss a nice fruit smoothie or iced juice in my direction, and I will gladly accept. No question, refreshing, cold beverages are definitely in my top ten reasons summer is amazing.

7. Produce Availability

Even if I’m not heading out to the field to pick produce myself, the stuff waiting for me at the market is fresher and tastier than anything I could purchase during the winter. In fact, the market doesn’t even open every week during the winter, so I think that fact speaks for itself.

8. Summer Clothes

I do appreciate a good oversized sweater, but I always prefer to avoid heavy clothes whenever possible. Since that’s not an option in the frigid winter, I embrace the chance to throw on a tank and flowing skirt. I can comfortably rock my tees and shorts; I don’t have to weigh myself down with tons of layers.

9. Longer Days

I can get so much more done during summer days. They stretch on and on, leaving the sun to shine down upon me for hours longer than during winter days. It’s always such a bummer in the winter to wake up in the dark, spend the sunny hours at work and then return home in the dark. No such problem exists in the summer.

10. Windows Down

Driving with the windows down is the greatest luxury when it comes to riding in a vehicle. I hardly ever use the AC; I’m rolling down my windows at any viable opportunity. Even though a bee did fly in my car once, nothing can deter me from that awesome feeling of wind in my hair fresh air in my lungs.

If you’re like me, you’re going to want to spend as much time as possible outdoors this summer. So get off your cell or laptop and go enjoy that sunshine!
