I’m sure you've all heard the recent news that another snow storm is set to hit our region early next week. It’s moments like these, when the weather is still bitterly cold and the snow is falling, that I long for the warm spring sun. Spring-- in my opinion--is a vastly underrated season. Usually when it hits, school-age kids start their countdowns to summer, parents start planning 4th of July barbecues and everyone seems to miss the true beauty of the season. It’s completely possible that my passion for spring has everything to do with my birthday (March 24th if anyone is wondering), or the fact that I won’t have to wear 5 layers to work every day. Either way, I am celebrating my excitement for spring with a list of fun spring events in central PA.
Murder at Mount Hope Mansion (Feb 28th – Mar 29th) – Mystery, intrigue and wine – Oh my! Murder at Mount Hope Mansion is an interactive, culinary and murder mystery event. Let me set the stage: Step into the mansion and a 1938 America. The Great Depression is in full swing and the only hope the country has lies within a paranormal research team and their ability to put an end to the economic downturn. Hilarity will ensue, decades-long mysteries will be solved and dinner will be served. This is one event I will not miss!
Hike the Appalachian Trail – As a nature buff, I got super lucky when I moved to Central PA. There are so many amazing opportunities to experience the great outdoors! While the Black Forrest Trail may have to wait, I’m excited to continue my education in hiking, and hit the trails this spring and summer.
Hershey 10K Race (April 13th) – The best part about spring is being able to stretch your legs! I'm a passionate runner, but that passion doesn’t carry on through the winter. Luckily, I have the Chocolate Town Challenges to whip me back into shape. With a portion of the proceeds benefitting the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Pennsylvania, the Hershey 10K race is the perfect opportunity to get outside and run! Running isn’t your thing? No worries! Hold out for the Tour de Chocolate Town bike tour. The tour features four different routes: the beginner 17.5 mile, an intermediate 35 miler or if you’re up for a challenge, the 65 or 100 mile courses are also available.
Root for the Senators on City Island (Apr – Sept) –Take me out to the ball game – seriously! I’m not sure if there is anything better than hot dogs, beer and a hometown baseball game in the spring. I’m not a huge fan of MLB, but I will certainly make it out to a few Senators’ games this season. After all, I have to root, root, root for the home team!
While this list isn't exhaustive, it is a nice round-up of spring-time events. I hope you find the beauty of spring and get out to experience it this year. I know you won’t regret it!
