I had an interesting conversation with a friend today about philanthropists we know. The best ones really don't dole out money to anyone in need who comes their way. They make them "prove" that their gift won't be wasted.
If the man is in jail and has four kids to four women, he must undergo a vasectomy, associate with a different crowd and stay in rehab counseling in order to qualify for a scholarship. Another type of philanthropist trains recipients to own a house, obtain and hold a job, do taxes, get insurance, and send their kids to college. The recipient ends up doing most of the work. What's given is an opportunity, rather than straight cash.
This type of giving works because the philanthropist demands accountability and responsibility. It's tough love. And it works to improve society. So, thank you givers of the world.
