Anne Alaniz, DO,is a Gynecologic Oncology Fellow at WellSpan Health. She admits that at the beginning of her rotation, that she was worried that this would be very depressing. But, when she met mothers and daughters who faced cancer, she could then put a face to the disease, and saw that there was a lot more to it than she thought. She learns from the strength and character of these women and finds that her job is rewarding, not depressing as she once thought it would be. She can see a patient's eyes light up when she says, "There's something we can do for you." She is hopeful that she can help these women realize that cancer is not a death sentence, and that they can live a long and healthy life after cancer. And, she says it's rewarding to help people realize that there's hope for any stage of the cancer journey.

Washington's inability to reach a federal budget deal could come to a head later this week. Friday, March 1 is when $85 billion in automatic spending cuts are scheduled to take place. Known as sequestration, the deadline was set as a way to force Congress and the White House to work together to avoid what many consider drastic cuts that neither party would want. Half of the spending reductions would come from defense and the other half from domestic programs.

The Congressional Budget Office says the sequester will result in the loss of 750,000 jobs and some say it could send the nation back into a recession. The White House indicates Pennsylvania faces cuts of $26.4 million in education, the furlough of 26,000 civilian Department of Defense employees at the state's military facilities, and a $5.7 million reduction in funding to environmental programs.

First term Republican Congressman Scott Perry, who represents York and Adams Counties and parts of Cumberland and Dauphin Counties will address the sequester on Tuesday's Radio Smart Talk.

Ann Johnston, of York County, shared the story of her mother, Dr. Marion Johnston, of Cumberland County, who became a female physician in the 1950's despite social challenges.

"Dr. Marion Johnston has been a huge inspiration to many women in Central Pennsylvania.

Dr. Johnston, a pediatrician, practiced medicine in Sewickley, PA and then in Carlisle PA. For many of these years, she was the only or nearly the only woman physician on the hospital staff. She graduated in 1949 from the Women's Medical College of Pennsylvania, now part of Drexel.

The year Marion was born, women had just won the right to vote in the US. Despite the cultural and social pressures against women entering the work force, Dr. Marion pursued her dreams of becoming a physician. She went on to marry another physician and to raise five children.

Dr. Marion has been a role model at each step of the way to her four daughters and to others who have met her: on how to pursue your dreams, on how to balance work and family and now on how to age gracefully."

Grace Marie teaching her Creative Nonviolent Conflict Resolution course to incarcerated men at the Rockview State Correctional Institution in State College, PA

In conjunction with the PBS documentary MAKERS: Women Who Changed America, witf has been collecting inspiring and untold stories of remarkable Central Pennsylvania women. We've received a number of inspiring stories of local women, and will be sharing them with you at our Makers page.

Melanie Snyder, of Lancaster County, shared the story of State College resident Grace Marie Hamilton, who has worked extensively to help improve the lives of prisoners and former inmates, below.

"Grace Marie Hamilton was a volunteer in Pennsylvania's state prisons for over 30 years. She has touched the lives of thousands of incarcerated men and women through unique programs she created based on simple principles: look for the GOOD in people, find ways to affirm that goodness, and provide inmates with opportunities to show their worth. Just one example is the PA Prison Runathon, an annual inmate-led and organized charity event that's been running inside PA state prisons since 1979 and through which PA prison inmates have raised over a quarter of a million dollars for Big Brothers Big Sisters and other organizations that serve at-risk youth.

Grace Marie had no formal education in criminal justice, and she wasn't part of 'the system' - yet she challenged conventional wisdom about how to deal with people who commit crimes.

I met Marie in 2007, and over a period of several years of research, I wrote a book about her life and work in the prisons (Grace Goes to Prison, Brethren Press, 2009). Before meeting her, I knew nothing about our prison system and never gave it any thought. What I learned from her and through her has inspired me to make a MAJOR mid-life career change: I have an MBA and worked for Fortune 500 companies for over 20 years. Now, I serve as Executive Director of the Lancaster County Reentry Management Organization (RMO), an organization that helps people being released from prison to get connected to services and supports so they can change their lives and become productive citizens. So, though Marie is retired from her prison work (she's 76 now), because she has inspired me to make this major career change, she continues to make a difference in the lives of many people and families in Central Pennsylvania."

Listen to Melanie Snyder describe Grace Marie Hamilton below:

(Camp Hill) -- The midstate has lost a trio of well-known philanthropists within the past few weeks.

Political activist and educator Ann Durr Lyon of Camp Hill, Cumberland County died at the age of 85 earlier this month.

Lyon was born in Alabama, where her parents were active in the Civil Rights movement.

She was featured as part of witf's Beyond the Bio project in 2011, when she discussed how her father worked with famed Civil Rights advocate E.D. Nixon to bail their friend Rosa Parks out of jail. "The night that Mrs. Parks didn't get up from the bus and got put in jail, Mr. Nixon called my father. They went in and they got Mrs. Parks out of jail, and Dad did the legal stuff."

Lyon eventually moved to the midstate, where she worked to address racial inequality in schools and other public places. "We did go to schools and talk about race and having black students come there, and we went to the housing projects that were segregated at that point."

Lyon founded the Human Service Program at Harrisburg Area Community College and served as a sociology professor there. She also created the Harrisburg Civil Rights Oral History Project.

Another Camp Hill philanthropist who recently died is Grace Pollock.

She and her late husband, S. Wilson "Bill" Pollock, helped establish the Pollock Children's Wing in the Fredricksen Library in Camp Hill.

94-year-old Grace Pollock also loved the arts and performed on Broadway as a ballerina. Her donation to the Camp Hill School District paved the way for the opening of the Grace Milliman Pollock Performing Arts Center there.

York County businessman Arthur Glatfelter, founder of Glatfelter Insurance Group, has also died.

The Dallastown resident, who died at age 88, opened the organization in 1951, and it's now one of the largest private insurance companies in the region.

Glatfelter served with the U.S. Marines in World War II, and founded the Pennsylvania Fire and Emergency Services Institute in Harrisburg, a nonprofit designed to educate lawmakers about the work of first responders.

Who is a woman of excellence? We’ll get a peek at a few of them from Central Pennsylvania tonight at 8 on Smart Talk on witf TV. We profile several of the YWCA of Greater Harrisburg’s 2013 Women of Excellence as witf gears up for a new initiative, “Makers: Women Who Make America.” It’s a companion, multimedia campaign to a new PBS documentary on how women have transformed American life over the last half-century.

Tina Nixon, executive director of the YWCA of Greater Harrisburg, Victoria “Vicci” Madden, an attorney and chief hearing officer of the Pennsylvania Board of Probation and Parole, Marilyn Bowers, office manager of Performance Construction Services, and Cate Barron, vice president of content for PA Media Group, will discuss the challenges and triumphs of women in our area. Vicci, Marilyn and Cate are among this year's Women of Excellence honorees.

Fresh out of college and working as a social worker in Delaware, Vicci Madden knew she wanted to find ways to help troubled young people stay out of prison. Rehabilitation was the key to turning their lives around. She also came to realize that she could accomplish much more in the criminal justice field if she earned a law degree. So, that’s exactly what she did at the Widener University School of Law. After earning her J.D., Vicci served in various legal capacities in the Pennsylvania Governor’s Office, the PA Attorney General’s Office and the state Department of Corrections. Now that she has specialized in the field of corrections, Vicci says she’s often "the only female in the room" at professional events and sometimes feels that she has “to do twice the homework” of her male counterparts.

But, she says, it’s worth it to help transform convicted offenders into productive members of society. Colleagues and friends describe her as the “go-to” person for a variety of work and community projects. She gives of her time and talents to teach Sunday school at her church, while also volunteering for the Girl Scouts, the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life, and the American Heart Association’s Heart Walk.

Marilyn Bowers was a divorced single mother of two children who knew she wanted a better life for her family. She worked two jobs, sometimes three, to save money for her own education and to ensure that her kids would be able to go to college. Marilyn fulfilled her dream last May by graduating in four years from Elizabethtown College. She’s now enrolled in a master’s degree program at Penn State Harrisburg. Marilyn is an office manager for Performance Construction Services, a subsidiary of Quandel Enterprises. You'll also find her in the spa at The Hotel Hershey on the weekends where she is a nail technician. “Education is freedom. It’s expression. Your future is very limited if you do not have the education to move forward,” Marilyn notes with pride.

Cate Barron is a familiar name, if not face, to readers of The Patriot-News of Harrisburg. As the paper's then-executive editor, Barron was instrumental in the Patriot earning the 2012 Pulitzer Prize and other notable journalism awards for coverage of the Jerry Sandusky/PSU child sex-abuse case. Cate began her journalism career as news director at a radio station in her hometown, Lewistown, PA, and then moved on to become a reporter and editor at the Lewistown Sentinel. Her career at the Patriot began in 1985 and included stints as the Sunday editor, managing editor and editor. In January, she became vice president of content for PA Media Group, the new digitally-focused news and information company that includes the Patriot-News, Pennlive.com and other print and digital projects. Cate's bio states that "she believes she has a mission to provide our community with the best in news and information. She works to make sure that those who have a voice are held accountable and that those without a voice are given one."

By different paths, but with the same conviction to achieve and to serve others, these women bring excellence to our communities. Join us on Valentine’s Day as we celebrate these ladies and others who have blazed a trail before us. Join the conversation live at 8 p.m. at 1-800-729-7532, email us at smarttalk@witf.org, post a comment to this article, or on Facebook or Twitter.

For her time, Mira Lloyd Dock was an exceptional woman: a university-trained botanist, lecturer, women's club leader, activist in the City Beautiful movement, and public official - the first woman to be appointed to Pennsylvania's state government. In her twelve years on the Pennsylvania Forest Commission, she allied with the likes of J. T. Rothrock, Gifford Pinchot, and Dietrich Brandeis to help bring about a new era in American forestry. She was also an integral force in founding and fostering the Pennsylvania State Forest Academy in Mont Alto, which produced generations of Pennsylvania foresters before becoming Penn State Mont Alto campus.

Though much has been written about her male counterparts, Mira Lloyd Dock and the Progressive Era Conservation Movement is the first book dedicated to Mira Lloyd Dock and her work. Shippensburg University's Professor Susan Rimby weaves these layers of Dock's story together with the greater historic context of the era to create a vivid and accessible picture of Progressive Era conservation in the eastern United States, and Dock's important role and legacy in that movement.

A free podcast of Professor Rimby's keynote talk at the 2012 Harrisburg Book Festival is available online here.

The city of York is known as the White Rose City. York has a place in American history as the nation's first capital and where the name "United States of America" was first used. In 1950, York had almost 60,000 residents. Today, the population is closer to 44,000. Like many other American cities, York lost people to the suburbs as manufacturing jobs moved or were eliminated.

Also like other cities, York has its share of challenges and a lot of them are related to money and the city's limited options to generate revenue.

While York struggles with finances, so far it has avoided being designated as distressed like 21 other Pennsylvania cities.

York Mayor Kim Bracey often says "Pennsylvania's local tax, pension, and arbitration systems as well as urban boundaries are outdated, broken, and unfair." She is one of almost every big city mayor in the state that has called on the legislature to change laws to provide options to cities.

Like other cities, York is sometimes perceived as having a crime problem. A recent report ranked York 18th in the country in crime per capita -- something the city disputes, saying the methodology was flawed and that York actually has its lowest crime rate in seven years.

The city's schools have also been graded poorly.

Mayor Bracey will appear on Thursday's program to discuss how she has tackled these issues and others.

“The Women’s Movement, broadly defined, impacted every aspect of American life,” said filmmaker Dyllan McGee, the founder of MAKERS. “It is a very moving, dramatic, and often funny story that we have produced in a way that will appeal not only to women, but to men as well — we want it to be ‘must see TV’ for the whole family.”

Narrated by three-time Academy Award-winning actress Meryl Streep, MAKERS: WOMEN WHO MAKE AMERICA takes its cue from the movement’s motto, “The personal is political,” delving into the personal lives of its subjects. The film is built from first-person, intimate accounts of women who experienced this time of change, including movement leaders such as author and feminist activist Gloria Steinem and Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton; opponents such as conservative activist Phyllis Schlafly; celebrities including media leader Oprah Winfrey and journalist Katie Couric; political figures such as U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton; business leaders such as Linda Alvarado, president and CEO of Alvarado Construction, Inc., and a co-owner of The Colorado Rockies; and many “ordinary” women who confronted the dramatic social upheaval in their own lives.

“By spotlighting some of the most remarkable women in our nation’s modern history, MAKERS: WOMEN WHO MAKE AMERICA will tell the comprehensive story of how women have advanced in our country during the last half century. We know the documentary will educate and enlighten, but we hope it will also inspire viewers to make positive changes in their own communities,” said Paula A. Kerger, President and CEO of PBS. “PBS and our member stations are proud to support this celebration and dialogue about the role of women in our society.”

Through the perspectives of those who lived through historic milestones, MAKERS: WOMEN WHO MAKE AMERICA will recount the seminal events in the Women’s Movement, including the publication of The Feminine Mystique in 1963, the battles to end discriminatory laws and practices over the following decade, and Anita Hill’s testimony against Clarence Thomas before the Senate Judiciary Committee in 1991. It will also go much further, telling the surprising and unknown stories of women who broke barriers in their own chosen fields — from the coal mines of West Virginia to the boardrooms of Madison Avenue. And it will take the story to today, when a new generation is both defending and questioning the legacy of their mothers.

“I’m so happy that we’re finally hearing the stories and voices of women who make America,” said Gloria Steinem, one of the project’s advisors and featured subjects. “We do what we see, not what we’re told, so an incomplete story of this country damages everyone. MAKERS will not only change our picture of the present, but release talent for the future.”

The broadcast of MAKERS: WOMEN WHO MAKE AMERICA comes on the heels of the launch of MAKERS.com early in 2012. This landmark multiplatform video experience from PBS and AOL aims to become the largest and most dynamic collection of women’s stories ever assembled. The AOL-developed interactive video platform has become a source of inspiration for millions of people, with more than 32.5 million video views to date.

“Our innovative approach to MAKERS.com has enabled us to inspire millions of people with thousands of MAKERS videos showcasing groundbreaking, trailblazing and diverse women who have made an indelible impact on our world today,” said Maureen Sullivan, SVP and General Manager, Women’s Content and Lifestyle Brands at AOL. “MAKERS.com will continue to chronicle the achievements of women everywhere through a growing collection of stories, expanding the reach of the MAKERS platform, and continuing this important dialogue.”

Women comprise 70% of the world's poorest people and own only 1% of the titled land, according to the United Nations. One-fifth of all primary-school age girls globally do not attend school. Women who are 15 to 45 years of age are more likely to be maimed or die from the violent act of a man than from cancer, malaria, traffic accidents, and war combined.

Those discouraging statistics are from the film Half the Sky -- Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide, which will be broadcast on WITF-TV Sunday, November 18 at 2 p.m.

Friday's Radio Smart Talk will address the challenges women around the world -- especially in developing countries -- face. The topics include education and economic empowerment, maternal mortality, and forced prostituion.

Joining us to discuss what can be done to improve the lives of women and girls will be Patricia Gadsden, Founder and President of the organization Life Esteem and Ho Thanh Nguyen, founder of the Pennsylvania Immigrant and Refugee Women's Network.
