Who needs more stuff? Just think for a moment how much stuff you have bought and still use. Do you have a lot of this "stuff" sitting in your house that is never used?

Time to analyze the spending process as to "needs". If you need it, buy it; if you don't "need" it, don't buy it. This will save you headaches, give you more money in your pocket and will reduce the amount of stress in your life.

If you are telling yourself that you will never get out of debt, change your thinking pattern. Anything is possible if you make a decision, concentrate on a goal and dedicate yourself.

Do not believe salesmen either...they will tell you anything to get you to buy. They do not have a job if they don't sell. Research what you need and buy the best quality for the least amount of money.

If you want to get out of debt, you must have some concrete goals.

Where do you want to be in 6 months, a year or 5 years? Do you still want to be in debt? Would you be willing to sacrifice some of your time now so you can have more peace of mind later?

All of these things are totally up to...YOU. You make decisions about your financial future. You are in control. Do not let others, such as salesmen, credit card companies, banks and other means coerce you into getting deeper in debt.

There is not better time than now to get out of debt. Start your goal list today. Read it several times a day, every day and make it your #1 priority.

Getting goals to work for you takes priority setting and discipline, which I believe is a learned habit. Anyone can get out of debt but the steps need to be made to get on the debt-free path first.

What is stopping you?

Do you or someone you know have an addiction to "stuff"?

If so, what is the purpose of having all this stuff?

Purposes for buying "stuff" vary.

Below are some reasons why people buy "stuff":

Addiction to spending

Want to have what everyone else has (or friends have)

Rebellion against spouse or significant other over finances

Emotional reasons such as approval or excitement seeking, feelings of deprivation in childhood, depression, anger, fear, boredom

Excuses such as "having a bad day at work" (unnecessary credit card spending just puts a person more in debt and causes more negative feelings)

Impulsive or compulsive behavior

Drowning in debt and feeling hopeless (the belief that the person will never get out of debt)

Although this is not an inclusive list, this list above may include behaviors that are relatable to a person’s situation

Dealing with the debt now, taking steps to get out of debt, penning a plan and ACTING on it is the best solution to a debt-free lifestyle.

Just imagine yourself two or three years down the road with NO DEBT. No car payments, no mortgage, no wasteful credit card payments. What would life look like? Imagine how much money you could actually save for yourself.

No debt situation is hopeless; it is just a problem waiting to be solved.

The moral to this blog is:

“Stuff” does not define us; our morals and values do. Act on what is important to you in life; not what is important to everyone else.

A Mary Hunt special article. Read and absorb:

I’ve also concluded that regardless of the amount of money we have, there are three main reasons people experience money troubles:

1. Financial problems are rooted in one’s refusal to accept the fact that life is not fair. As long as you feel entitled to material things you cannot afford, you will have money troubles.

2. Financial problems are the result of irregular and unpredictable expenses. When people add up their monthly expenses they don’t think about the things that don’t happen on a regular basis. When irregular expenses creep up, they see them as emergencies or financial crises.

3. Financial problems will never go away as long as unsecured debt is carried from month to month. Credit-card debt has an odd way of reproducing.

Financial ease has nothing to do with being rich. It comes as the result of taking responsibility and by following sound financial principles and rules. And the first place to start is examining your spending and getting it in line with your income.

Whether your financial situation requires a minor correction or a major overhaul, no situation is hopeless. Not even in these recessionary times. No matter where you are right now, you can take control of your finances. You can get out of debt and learn how to live below your means. You can get off the financial roller coaster and stay on level ground where money ceases to be an issue. But you’ve got to follow the rules.

If you are trying to figure out how to start your debt-free plan, the steps below may help to get you want to be.

Create a realistic spending plan, which is a personal or family budget.
Set aside money each month to pay down existing debt.
Stick with your plan and avoid unnecessary "impulse" purchases.
Contact your creditors requesting lower interest rates or to settle debt.
Pay down debts one-by-one, starting with the smallest debt. You can also start with your highest interest debt but you may not see an impact as quickly. Starting with the smallest debt and paying it off is a motivational technique to keep you on track.
Don't use credit cards! Use a debit card to stay on track. Cash and the envelope system are always the best option.
Avoid taking out additional loans that add to your debt.

Are you on the right path?
Do you have a detailed plan to strategize your debt elimination?

Whatever the strategy is, anyone can pay off debt and live debt-free if they are dedicated to their goal and agree to change lifestyle habits.

To become debt-free, there are basic steps that should be taken:

•	Stop acquiring new debt and cut up all existing credit cards.
•	Agree to a lifestyle change of not spending just to spend; not spending on impulse; analyzing spending patterns and determining what is a "want" and what is a "needs". (We really do not "need" Starbucks or Dunkin' Donuts coffee. This is a want. A generic Folgers coffee at home would be a more feasible option).
•	Establish a $1,000 emergency fund (if you are unemployed, try to obtain a $500 emergency fund, if possible).
•	Attack existing debt and pay it off.

If someone continues to spend what they do not have, they will most likely never achieve the debt-free goals they have set for themselves.

What does your plan look like?
Are you ready for a new you?

What we all really need is money for retirement. When we translate all the money we are dumping into debt and lifestyle habits (such as Coach purses and Starbucks coffee), the only people seeing the money are the corporations selling us "stuff".
Be careful who you take advice from when it comes to financial information.

Credit card companies, banks and other lending institutions publish information on their websites and also send emails with information that looks to be informative. I find that most of this informaiton is swayed in favor of the lender for consolidation loans or other "we'll help you get out of debt" solutions.

Look for articles that are published by non-profit agencies such as Debor's Anonymous and Consumer Credit Counseling. There is a wealth of information on the internet about debt that is not published by credit card companies. People that have dug themselves out of debt are also excellent sources of information.

If you have credit card debt, try to pay it off as quickly as possible. Never roll credit card debt into a mortgage.

Always look at the source of debt information as it can be extremely misleading.

2. Cultivate contentment by choosing to be happy with what you have. The social imperative that one must consume to be happy is what breeds dissatisfaction and nonfulfillment. The constant ratcheting up of standards demands that we constantly upgrade in order to keep up. It takes a conscious effort to desire less.

3. Write down the things you need to remember, and forget everything else. Don’t allow your mind to dwell on things over which you have no control.

4. Share, lend, borrow and rent. Part of the reason we have our love affair with shopping and consumerism is because we think we need to personally own everything we use. Before you agree to complicate your life further with yet another possession, consider the alternatives.

5. Turn off the TV. You may not realize how your household television viewing is affecting your purchasing and lifestyle choices. If you are addicted to television, kicking the habit will simplify your life and allow you to find satisfaction.

6. Drive a simple car. High-end, luxury automobiles are nice to drive, but can complicate one’s life. Typically they are gas-guzzlers and expensive to insure, register, maintain and repair.

7. Select patterned carpet. Light colored, plush carpeting is beautiful but life altering. It shows every speck, spot, fleck and crumb. If you want your carpets to look good without having to spend all your free time spotting, vacuuming, de-flecking and uncrumbing, go with something speckled, patterned or multicolored.

8. Take charge of the phone. Just because it happens to be a convenient time for someone to call you doesn’t mean it’s convenient for you to answer. Let your calls go to voice mail or get an answering machine. Getting control of the phone will add simplicity to your life.

9. Become label conscious. Unless it’s mandatory for your profession, do not buy clothes that must be dry cleaned. You’ll save time, aggravation and a ton of money over the long-haul.

10. Get up earlier. The best hour of the day is the one right before you normally get up. It may take you a few weeks to truly enjoy that hour right before dawn, but when you create the habit you will be amazed by the simplicity that 60 quiet, stress-free minutes will add to your day.

6. Have you ever made unrealistic promises to your creditors?

7. Does the pressure of your debts make you careless of the welfare of your family?

14. Have you ever developed a strict regimen for paying off your debts, only to break it under pressure?

15. Do you justify your debts by telling yourself that you are superior to the "other" people, and when you get your "break" you'll be out of debt overnight?

How did you score? If you answered yes to eight or more of these questions, the chances are that you have a problem with compulsive debt, or are well on your way to having one. If this is the case, today can be a turning point in your life.

We have all arrived at this crossroad. One road, a soft road, lures you on to further despair, illness, ruin, and in some cases, mental institutions, prison, or suicide. The other road, a more challenging road, leads to self-respect, solvency, healing, and personal fulfillment. We urge you to take the first difficult step onto the more solid road now.
