Not only did they naturally sort the rocks into groups with gold and without gold, they began finding other traits. “This one has lines with colors!” This one is bumpy and this one is smooth!” One student wanted to “bang” them open to see what was inside.

Katie commented, “manipulatives are not just for making the abstract ideas in math more concrete. Since they work so well for math concepts, why not use them in all areas? Science is a great area, and why not social studies?”
