I Want to Be a Baker!

Chocolate and Violet Pastry

Are your bakes worthy of a Paul Hollywood handshake?

We are seeking amateur bakers to enter in any of the below four categories. You may apply for one or two categories. If you choose to apply for two categories, only one of them may be a Signature bake. Bakers are expected to stay at the Signature Bakes tables to interact with guests and answer any questions. All baking is to be done at home, then brought to the event that morning. You may do final decorating and plating on site but no mixing or baking!

Each Contestant Baker may choose to have one Assistant at his or her table, but only one Contestant Baker will be named and awarded. Assistants may help in transportation, decoration and plating, but all baking must be performed by the Contestant Baker. This is not a team competition.

Signature Bakes

Cream Horns

The Signature category is where flavors will shine! Each Baker must provide a minimum of 150 samples, although please keep in mind that the maximum capacity of the competition event is 400 people. WITF will provide small plates, forks, spoons and napkins as needed. Official Judges will score Signature Bakes accordingly: 60% Taste, 30% Presentation, 10% Innovation.

  • Brownies

Savory Signature

Showstopper Bakes

3 Tier Cheesecake

The Showstopper category is your opportunity to exhibit your artistic flare and presentation skills! WITF will offer guests the opportunity to take the Showstopper Bakes home through a slient auction, with proceeds benefiting WITF public media. NOTE: The base you use for your Showstopper Bake will not be returned to you. Showstopper Bakes will not be cut-into for the competition, but they will be mostly judged on presentation. Showstopper Bakes must be accompanied by 5 separate samples for Official Judge tasting. For example, a Bread Sculpture Showstopper must have five samples of the main type(s) of bread baked for the sculpture (which could be one small loaf cut into five slices.) Each sample should be 2 - 5 bites. The Showstopper will be displayed on a table. The Showstopper base and bake may not exceed 24 inches wide by 24 inches long by 36 inches high. Must be served at room temperature. Official Judges will score Showstopper Bakes accordingly: 60% Presentation, 30% Taste, 10% Innovation.

Bake and decorate 1 Showstopper and 5 complementary samples of something sweet. Examples may include:

  • A decorated three tier cake, with one separate small cake of the same recipe, for judges to slice and sample
  • A gingerbread scene, with five gingerbread cookies for judges' tasting
  • A croquembouche, with five separate cream puffs for judges' tasting

Savory Showstopper

Bake and decorate 1 Showstopper and 5 complementary samples of something savory. Examples may include:

  • A Victorian hand raised pie, with a separate smaller pie available for tasting
  • A sun-dried tomato star-brioche, with smaller brioche buns for judges to sample

Ready to Apply to be a Contestant Baker?

The Star Baker Awards competition is open to a maximum of 48 Contestant Bakers (number of bakers within each category may vary). Applicants must be home bakers. No professional bakers, caterers, pastry chefs or cooks, please! Employees of WITF or sponsor(s), and members of the same household, may not apply. Applicants must be over 18 and residents of Pennsylvania.

Applications must be submitted by MAY 13, 2018. Applicants selected to be Contestant Bakers to join the competition will be notified BY EMAIL by May 18. If a Contestant Baker does not respond to the email within three days, WITF will call the Contestant Baker. If no response is heard from the Contestant Baker two days after that, WITF reserves the right to negate the invitation and select another applicant for the competition.

Contestant Baker applicants are asked to:

1. Complete and submit the Contestant Baker Application Form

2. Provide the following documents to WITF by May 13th:

  • Recipe of bake for the competition
  • Picture of any bakes you have done in the past, whether of the submitted recipe or of something else very special
  • Short video (a one minute phone video is fine) introducing yourself and answering the question, "Why is your bake the best?"

The three additional documents are not mandatory for consideration but may help sway the selection committee in your favor! When possible be sure to include your full name either in the document file name or spoken clearly at the beginning of your video.

All documents can be emailed directly to bake@witf.org. We recommend using a free service such as WeTransfer for any files larger than 10MB.

We look forward to seeing you on Saturday, June 9!
