witf, central Pennsylvania’s public media organization, plans a comprehensive celebration of its 50th anniversary starting in November 2014 and concluding in December 2015. The start of the celebration is timed to when witf TV signed on the air (November 22, 1964). witf FM signed on April 1, 1971.

The 50th Anniversary will include the publication of our history (now being researched), special events featuring public television and radio personalities, and a Gala celebration late in 2015. As part of the published history, we are compiling a list of witf’s original TV and radio productions, and awards, and also want to include as complete a listing as possible of all witf staff members from the beginning. Employee records for recent decades are reasonably complete, but records for the early years are spotty, and we also want to make sure we've identified all the various positions that each staff member may have held during her/his time at witf.

When he lost his job as an IT consultant in software development, Art Straub of Harrisburg decided to set a challenge for himself. He had a background doing photojournalism, but never had time to develop the artistic side of taking photos. With time on his hands, he decided that he would give himself the challenge of taking one creative photo every day for a year and posting it on the Web.

He found that the process made him start looking at things differently. “When you’re looking for a picture, you start looking deeper into the world around you,” Straub said. He also benefited from the exercise and lost weight.

That year provided his education in creating artistic photographs centered mainly on nature themes. He learned not only aspects of taking the photos, but he became deeply involved in the post-production process of manipulating the images in a variety of ways.

As his photos grew consistently better, his friends began to encourage him to consider creating an exhibit of his work. The first solo exhibit of his nature photography will be in the Lowengard Atrium at the witf Public Media Center from May 9 to July 9.

Straub has a new IT consulting job now, doing what he did on a larger scale with a national company. But without the yearlong opportunity to explore his photography, Straub said he never would have had the creative energy to develop his art.

For Dennis Felty, his first job after college sparked his creative vision.

After graduating from Elizabethtown College in 1968, Felty worked at the Harrisburg State Hospital, an institution built to care for the mentally ill. Felty said he remembers the deplorable living conditions there vividly.

A few years later, he cofounded Keystone Human Services to aid people with severe disabilities. He remains its president today. And his professional experience influences his work as a fine-art photographer. He has completed a number of photographic essays of people living in state centers in Pennsylvania, as well as projects involving children who live in the orphanages and psychiatric hospitals of Russia, Romania and Moldova.

Some of his images will be on display from March 8 to May 8 in the Loewengard Atrium at the witf Public Media Center in Swatara Twp. The exhibit is a co-presentation with photographer Daniel Shanken and is called “Advancing the Human Spirit.”

Shanken is a commercial photographer at Shanken Photography Inc. in Harrisburg. With a background in photojournalism, Shanken covered the Israeli/Palestinian conflict for the Associated Press and photographed the towers of the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001.

The two artists share a common vision for their exhibit — both featuring images of people with disabilities. They aim for the viewer to see their subjects as people of worth, value and individuality.

The two have worked together for seven years, and have such a similar approach that Felty said he sometimes has difficulty remembering which images are his and which are Shanken’s. In this exhibit the artist who took each individual photograph will not be identified.

As part of our annual Roses Campaign, we asked you to recommend date locations or activities in central Pennsylvania in time for Valentine's Day. Below are the recommendations you posted to our website and Facebook page. A couple of the suggestions are a bit cold for Valentine's Day, but we recommend tucking the ideas away for spring, because there are some great ones in there!

Leslie Moore Raymond: "Stocks on 2nd in Harrisburg - First date, spectacular date."

Luna: "I recommend rock climbing at the Climbnasium in Mechanicsburg!"

Candy DeBerry: "My first official date with the woman who has been my partner for 15+ years was the battlefield at Gettysburg. A picnic under the trees at Barlow's Knoll, a stroll around Little Round Top, and lying on blankets watching the twilight come down at the Virginia monument. (Might be a bit chilly for Feb 14, though.)"

MaryJane Wertz: "Happy Hour at Bricco's Bar and a movie at the Midtown"

Christin Joy: "Live stage show at Carlisle Theatre and Performing Arts Center"

Leslie Moore Raymond: "A fly-fishing date at Allenberry!"

Kathy Burgoyne: "Any performance at the Strand in York is a treat whether comedy, drama or musical. We also enjoy catching a Sunday matinee in the Capitol theater. There are often great treats to accompany the movie and maybe even a glass of wine."

Colette Cope: "I could never pick the single best activity or location (there's too much to do!), but I love going kayaking with my fiance on the Yellow Breeches and Conodoguinet. It's too cold for Valentine's Day but keep it in mind for the spring. There are a countless number of beautiful hiking and camping locations all around us too!"

Dan: "I met my wife at Longwood Gardens no better place to start a lifetime."

Do you have any more ideas? Post your suggested activity or location in the comments below. Don't forget to share this post with your friends on Facebook or Twitter so that we can get as many ideas as possible!

And don't forget to order roses for your loved one. There's no better way to kick off any date than with a beautiful bouquet. During our roses campaign your can offer financial support for witf and send flowers to your loved one all at the same time!

It’s the time of the year when we honor those people and things that are most important to us. Send a message of love or show your appreciation for someone special, while at the same time helping to enrich the lives of everyone in our region, by supporting witf.

Once again for Valentine’s Day, witf is offering the opportunity for listeners to honor someone special in their life and show their financial support for public radio and TV in Central Pennsylvania. With your contribution of $120, witf will send one dozen boxed, long-stemmed red roses to a loved one, complete with a personalized message. A half-dozen boxed, long-stemmed red roses will be sent on your behalf for a gift of $85. The flowers can be delivered anywhere in the United States. If you prefer, you can also choose a "rainbow" rose bouquet instead of the red bouquet.

Back by popular demand this year, we are also offering a special "Wow!" bouquet for $250. This very special bouquet features 2 dozen red, long-stem roses in a lead crystal vase. This bouquet can only be delivered in the local Royer's coverage area, however.

New this year, you can send the "Wow!" bouquet with a large 24 inch plush stuffed bear for $365.

Also new this year, you may add a small bear to your half or full dozen order for an additional $10. So a half dozen roses with a small bear would be $95, and a dozen roses with a small bear would be $130.

Those interested in taking early advantage of this opportunity may do so beginning January 18 by calling 1-800-233-9483 or by visiting www.witf.org. It's best to make your contribution early, as delivery options narrow as Valentine’s Day approaches. The transaction must be charged to your Visa, MasterCard, Discover or American Express. Cash and checks are not accepted.
