Science is about trying to make sense of the world. The idea of explaining science to young children can feel overwhelming to many adults. But luckily, explanations about science aren't what young children want at first. They want to play! Curiosity drives children’s interest in science and we can all appreciate curiosity. So where do we start?

witf’s first home in Hershey, PA

witf, central Pennsylvania’s public media organization, plans a comprehensive celebration of its 50th anniversary starting in November 2014 and concluding in December 2015. The start of the celebration is timed to when witf TV signed on the air (November 22, 1964). witf FM signed on April 1, 1971.

The 50th Anniversary will include the publication of our history (now being researched), special events featuring public television and radio personalities, and a Gala celebration late in 2015. As part of the published history, we are compiling a list of witf’s original TV and radio productions, and awards, and also want to include as complete a listing as possible of all witf staff members from the beginning. Employee records for recent decades are reasonably complete, but records for the early years are spotty, and we also want to make sure we've identified all the various positions that each staff member may have held during her/his time at witf.

When he lost his job as an IT consultant in software development, Art Straub of Harrisburg decided to set a challenge for himself. He had a background doing photojournalism, but never had time to develop the artistic side of taking photos. With time on his hands, he decided that he would give himself the challenge of taking one creative photo every day for a year and posting it on the Web.

He found that the process made him start looking at things differently. “When you’re looking for a picture, you start looking deeper into the world around you,” Straub said. He also benefited from the exercise and lost weight.

That year provided his education in creating artistic photographs centered mainly on nature themes. He learned not only aspects of taking the photos, but he became deeply involved in the post-production process of manipulating the images in a variety of ways.

As his photos grew consistently better, his friends began to encourage him to consider creating an exhibit of his work. The first solo exhibit of his nature photography will be in the Lowengard Atrium at the witf Public Media Center from May 9 to July 9.

Straub has a new IT consulting job now, doing what he did on a larger scale with a national company. But without the yearlong opportunity to explore his photography, Straub said he never would have had the creative energy to develop his art.

On May 25, we'll be taking a bus trip to the beautiful Wolf Trap Theatre in Virginia to attend a live taping of "A Prairie Home Companion."

The buses will depart at around noon at Lancaster, York and Harrisburg locations. Lunch will be included. The show starts at 5:45 p.m.

Plan to attend the witf Will and Estate Planning Seminar on April 25 from 9:00AM-1:00PM. witf has partnered with local attorneys, financial planners, and CPAs to offer free professional guidance on how to create a bequest, transfer wealth, and prepare to take care of loved ones as well as the charities we care about. Education sessions will begin at the top of every hour, and the event will close with a panel discussion and complementary lunch. The Will and Estate Planning Seminar is free to the public but registration is required by April 22. Lunch will be provided courtesy of Jan L. Brown and Associates and Country Meadows Retirement Communities.

We already have Valentine's Day on the mind at witf, as we gear up for our annual Roses Campaign. As such, we've been brainstorming the best places in central Pennsylvania to take that special someone.

If you’re anything like us, you’re sometimes at a loss for new and interesting date ideas. Dinner and a movie is great, but every now and then we need to take it up a notch with something different.

So we're asking you for your top suggestions for where to take a date in central Pennsylvania. (We won't even frown upon those dinner ideas, as long as they are especially unique or romantic.)

Once again for Valentine’s Day, witf is offering the opportunity for listeners to honor someone special in their life and show their financial support for public radio and TV in Central Pennsylvania. With your contribution of $120, witf will send one dozen boxed, long-stemmed red roses to a loved one, complete with a personalized message. A half-dozen boxed, long-stemmed red roses  will be sent on your behalf for a gift of $85. The flowers can be delivered anywhere in the United States. If you prefer, you can also choose a "rainbow" rose bouquet instead of the red bouquet.

Back by popular demand this year, we are also offering a special "Wow!" bouquet for $250. This very special bouquet features 2 dozen red, long-stem roses in a lead crystal vase. This bouquet can only be delivered in the local Royer's coverage area, however.

New this year, you can send the "Wow!" bouquet with a large 24 inch plush stuffed bear for $365.
