Explore the free art exhibit at WITF's Public Media Center in Harrisburg. On display during regular business hours, through February: an eclectic mix of photography from Mitch Mandel.

Artist Statement

"I have been a commercial, editorial and food photographer for the past 40 years, producing book and magazine covers and illustrations for publications such as Men's Health, Women's Health, Prevention, People, Vanity Fair, sports titles such as Runner's World and Bicycling, cookbooks such as The South Beach Diet series, Bulletproof Diet, American Cake and many others.

I have drawn inspiration from photographing fine furniture and architecture such as Paolo Soleri's Arcosanti in Arizona.  In fact, my work with American Woodworker magazine led me to a second lifelong passion for fine furniture design and construction.

But my photography is not limited to still-lives of high-tech sporting gear, beautifully styled Thanksgiving spreads, and photo shoots with authors and models.

My personal work revolves around the study of light and form.  I take inspiration from the old school traditionalists and romantics like Edward Weston and Harry Callahan, but I am constantly trying to see beyond the apparent and find an alternative perspective hiding in plain view.  Whether shooting landscape, portrait or still life, I try to elicit the inherent nature and organic intimacy of the subject.

This show features a modest selection of personal work that spans my entire career, and thus serves as a retrospective of sorts, but hopefully not a final coda."
