As a youngster, Karen Commings loved to draw and paint, taking instruction from various teachers in charcoal, pastel and oil painting. She entered Penn State in 1965 as a Fine Arts major but gave up her artistic pursuits in favor of a bachelor’s degree in Art History. She earned a master’s in Library Science at the University of Pittsburgh in 1978 and spent the next twenty years working in libraries. 35 years away from painting, she took brush to canvas once again in early 2007.

The witf Media Center will be displaying the work of Karen Commings through December 15th during business hours at 4801 Lindle Road in Harrisburg, PA. A free wine and cheese reception will be held on Thursday, November 17 from 5-7 p.m. This reception is open to the public!

Karen's art has been exhibited at Gallery@Second, Whitaker Center, Reservoir Mansion, Gallery 13 and Midtown Cinema, among other Harrisburg locations.

As writer for twenty years, Karen Commings has also authored eight books on pet care and more than 500 articles, some of which have appeared in Japan, Great Britain and Canada. She is a former columnist for Cat Fancy magazine, Computers in Libraries and Central Pennsylvania’s Apprise (now Central PA), and was contributing editor for Pets.com and Cornell University’s Catwatch magazine. Her pulp fiction has appeared in Black Petals, Outer Darkness, Dark Recesses, the Sun, Write Side Up and Long Story Short, among others.

Karen is a resident of Linglestown, Pa., and she supports her artistic pursuits by operating a pet-sitting business.
