The event featured a showing of an American Experience episode, American Experience presents Roberto Clemente and a discussion, led by Paul Doutrich, a Professor of History at York College of Pennsylvania, on the content of the film. Roberto Clemente explores the life and career of the Puerto Rican born baseball player and committed humanitarian who challenged racial discrimination to become baseball’s first Latino superstar. His career shed light on the societal issues of immigration, civil rights and cultural change. “With all the negative attention being paid to baseball these days, it’s important to look back at the kind of impact a true sports hero can have on our nation,” says American Experience executive producer Mark Samels. “Roberto Clemente was much more than an athlete—he channeled that fame into a larger mission of helping people, broke racial barriers, and continues to inspire today.”
