Desert Island Tribute Online

For eighteen years, the late Ellen Hughes produced and hosted the program Desert Island Discs for WITF, borrowing a format from the BBC.

Sitting at a table decorated with a little foldout paper palm tree, Ellen would ask her castaway guests to list eight recordings they would choose to have with them if they were stranded on a desert island.

Ellen interviewed more than 800 people of regional and national reputation in the course of the program.

As a tribute to her memory, WITF has rebroadcast a number of these programs. We are pleased as well to make available the series of programs available here online.

The interview sections with Ellen and her guests have been only minimally edited, to bring the programs to a uniform time for the broadcasts.

However, for online use it has been necessary to truncate the musical selections that are part of each program. While WITF maintains a broadcast license to put these musical selections on the air, different legal constraints apply for online use.

We regret that we are unable to include the full musical selections in these online versions due to rights issues.

These are not necessarily "the best" of Desert Island Discs, but a representative sample of authors, composers, politicians, journalists and musicians of the type you might find any week when tuning in to hear Desert Island Discs.

WITF thanks Ellen's husband, Nick Hughes, and her family for making these programs available to us from their own collection.
