An all-star trio of traditional Irish musicians performs on witf’s Center Stage. Each has had a separate acclaimed career.
Guitarist John Doyle is from Dublin. He was acoustic guitarist for four years with the Irish-American band Solas. He’s written many traditional-style songs and has appeared on a long list of recordings. Fiddler Martin Hayes is from County Clare, Ireland. He’s been All-Ireland Fiddle Champion six times and he plays regularly with the famous Tulla Ceili band of which his father was a founding member. Flute & whistle player Kevin Crawford is from Birmingham England, but his parents were immigrants from County Clare in Ireland. He’s played with a number of different groups including the Irish Band Lunasa.
When they all appeared at the Celtic music Sebastopol Festival in California, the organizer of the event put them together on a whim to play a set. Since none of them were drinkers, he dubbed them The Teetotallers. Since that 2010 event, the trio of friends has performed together on occasion under that name. The Susquehanna Folk Music Society brought them to the Fort Hunter Centennial Barn in Harrisburg in April of 2013 for an evening of Irish music-making, old and new.
Executive Director Jess Hayden of the SFMS also dropped by the studio to talk about the Teetotallers and some of the upcoming groups performing in their concert series. You can hear that interview below:
