The Mitchell Ruff Duo, consisting of pianist Dwike Mitchell and bassist and French horn player Willie Ruff had a long and celebrated career in jazz, performing together since they first met in the service in 1947. The Duo was launched officially in 1955, and the two played together all over the world up until just a few years ago.
The early high points of their career included playing the first jazz concert in the Soviet Union in 1959 at a time when jazz was still banned, playing for Lyndon Johnson in Mexico in 1966, performing on tour in the People’s Republic of China in 1981, and recording in a trio with jazz legend Dizzy Gillespie.
Dwike Mitchell of the Mitchell Ruff Duo just passed away in April 2013. Their Center Stage appearance is from a concert recorded in 1993 at Gettysburg College, in the prime of their music-making. The concert was provided by Russ Neff and recorded by John Uhl.
They bring their unique combination of piano, bass and French horn to original arrangements of music by Billy Strayhorn, George Gershwin, W.C. Handy and their own pieces.
