Fred Hughes Trio on Center Stage

Written by Cary Burkett, Arts & Culture Desk and WITF Host | Jan 20, 2014 3:53 PM

Saturday, April 26 at 8 p.m. on witf's Center Stage

Jazz pianist Fred Hughes is a Lancaster native, whose career in jazz was launched by his work with the Eighth Army Band in Seoul, Korea. He toured throughout the U.S. and abroad with the US Army’s premier touring jazz ensemble, the Jazz Ambassadors.

He has also performed with the Baltimore and Chicago Symphony Orchestra and served as conductor for the Cincinnati Pops, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and he was the musical director for Three Mo’ Tenors.

The Fred Hughes Trio is made up of Fred on piano, Frank Russo playing drums and Keith Mohler playing bass. Their 2012 recording In the Mist features some of Hughes original compositions.

In November 2013, they appeared at the Ware Center in Lancaster performing a tribute to great jazz pianists such as Fats Waller, Chick Corea, Oscar Pederson, Bill Evans, Herbie Hancock and others. Their appearance on Center Stage is from that cabaret concert.

Also, we’ll turn the Center Stage Spotlight on the new album by saxophonist Jonathan Ragonese and pianist Steve Rudolph, Ardent Marigolds. We’ll talk to both musicians about the creation of the recording and hear some tracks from it.
