Over the Rhine on Center Stage

Written by Cary Burkett, Arts & Culture Desk and witf Host | Dec 3, 2013 11:45 AM

Saturday, December 7 at 8 p.m. on witf's Center Stage

From a sold-out live concert at the Main Theatre in Ephrata, the popular performing and recording artists Over The Rhine make an appearance on witf’s Center Stage.

The core of the group is the husband and wife duo of Linford Detweiler and Karen Bergquist. They have been performing and recording together since 1989, and have developed an enthusiastic following for their poetic, folk-flavored music. Their previous CD, The Long Surrender, was rated 4 stars out of 4 by the LA Times.

Their appearance on Center Stage happens just as they release their much-anticipated new album, a double-CD set called Meet Me at the Edge of the World. The concert features a number of songs from the new recording, as well as some of their past favorites.

The album itself contains 18 original songs all related in some way to the farmhouse where they live in Ohio. One particular location on the farm seemed to them to evoke a sense of the “edge of the world”, and a song about that spot became the title track for the album.

For the concert at the Main Theatre, the opening act was singer/songwriter/cellist Ben Sollee, who has been getting quite a bit of attention for his own recordings. He wrote a song called Letting Go for the recent film Killing Season starring Robert de Niro and John Travolta. Ben Sollee joins Over the Rhine for a few numbers in the liveconcert. He’ll also be the subject under our Center Stage Spotlight this week.
