The Mississippi Railroad is an annual event presented by the Blues Society of Central PA in which they bring up a noted Mississippi blues artist to perform with regional musicians. The area blues band, The Cornlickers, started the tradition after many trips down to Mississippi to soak up the authentic blues sound of that region.
The Cornlickers are Dale Wise, drums and vocals, Dave Groniger, guitar, Bobby Gentilo, guitar and Tony Ryder, bass.
In 2013, the event featured renowned blues performer Terry “Harmonica” Bean. Backed by the Cornlickers and other musicians from the Blues Society, Terry Bean brought the authentic “Hill Country” blues onto the Shellsville VFW Picnic Gounds in Grantville, PA. The music on tonight’s Center Stage program comes from that live session.
Terry Bean also stopped by the witf studios to tell us fascinating stories about growing up playing the blues in Mississippi. His comments are included throughout the program this evening, painting a vivid picture of the history of the music handed down to him by his father and grandfather in the region where he was born.
