April Verch is from Ottawa Valley, Canada where she grew up immersed in the traditional folk music and dance of the area. She started step-dancing at age 3 and picked up the fiddle at age 6. In her teens she was a student at Mark O’Connor’s fiddle camp. By the time she graduated high school she had won the Canadian Open Old Time Fiddle Championship and released a pair of albums. In 2010, she represented Canada's fiddling tradition by performing in the Opening Ceremonies at the Olympic Winter Games.

Now she tours full time with the April Verch Band, which includes bassist and clawhammer banjo player Cody Walters and guitarist Hayes Griffin.
She performed at a Susquehanna Folk Music Society concert at the Abbey Bar in Harrisburg in January of 2013, which is where our Center Stage live performance was recorded.

witf, central Pennsylvania’s public media organization, plans a comprehensive celebration of its 50th anniversary starting in November 2014 and concluding in December 2015. The start of the celebration is timed to when witf TV signed on the air (November 22, 1964). witf FM signed on April 1, 1971.

The 50th Anniversary will include the publication of our history (now being researched), special events featuring public television and radio personalities, and a Gala celebration late in 2015. As part of the published history, we are compiling a list of witf’s original TV and radio productions, and awards, and also want to include as complete a listing as possible of all witf staff members from the beginning. Employee records for recent decades are reasonably complete, but records for the early years are spotty, and we also want to make sure we've identified all the various positions that each staff member may have held during her/his time at witf.

When he lost his job as an IT consultant in software development, Art Straub of Harrisburg decided to set a challenge for himself. He had a background doing photojournalism, but never had time to develop the artistic side of taking photos. With time on his hands, he decided that he would give himself the challenge of taking one creative photo every day for a year and posting it on the Web.

He found that the process made him start looking at things differently. “When you’re looking for a picture, you start looking deeper into the world around you,” Straub said. He also benefited from the exercise and lost weight.

That year provided his education in creating artistic photographs centered mainly on nature themes. He learned not only aspects of taking the photos, but he became deeply involved in the post-production process of manipulating the images in a variety of ways.

As his photos grew consistently better, his friends began to encourage him to consider creating an exhibit of his work. The first solo exhibit of his nature photography will be in the Lowengard Atrium at the witf Public Media Center from May 9 to July 9.

Straub has a new IT consulting job now, doing what he did on a larger scale with a national company. But without the yearlong opportunity to explore his photography, Straub said he never would have had the creative energy to develop his art.

As a member of a local CSA (Prescott's Patch), I decided to try some new recipes to get ready for the summer onslaught of kale! Kale is quite nutritious and holds up to a lot of different kinds of cooking. Even though I do enjoy it baked in the oven as kale chips, I have to admit that I don't enjoy it quite enough to cook and eat as a sidedish every night. So, I've been experimenting with ways to incorporate kale into foods that I already love.

Lately I've been making a kind of thick kale spaghetti sauce with tofu that's been a yummy addition to pasta or rice. I wash and break up kale leaves into pieces and then put them in the food processor with two cloves of garlic and some olive oil to make a kind of kale pesto.

Then I simmer the pesto mixture in whatever store-bought pasta sauce we have handy, and add a pinch of cayenne pepper and curry powder. I let it simmer for about 15-20 minutes, then remove it from the heat and let slices of regular firm tofu marinate in it for another 5-10 minutes.

I've served the tofu and sauce over both pasta and rice, and both have been tasty. This can make a fairly hearty dinner, particularly with some crusty bread or a salad on the side. What's nice is that you can prepare a whole pot of the kale-pesto and tomato sauce mixture at the beginning of the week and then take some out of the fridge to use on pasta or rice whenever you need a quick lunch or dinner.

I'll continue to post recipe ideas for kale and other kinds of veggies as they come into season. Enjoy the beautiful spring weather and the garden bounty on the way!

If downtown Harrisburg’s restaurant row, which was hot, then not, is hot again this summer, I’m betting it’ll be in no small part due to a beer and food place called Federal Taphouse on Second Street. Located in what was Dragonfly nightclub, the Taphouse specializes in beer, as in 100 craft beers, listed on a chalkboard and on both sides of a legal-sized beer menu.

But whether you’re into sampling wide varieties of brews or not, you’ll be impressed by the food menu and the quality of its offerings. There are specialty pizzas prepared in a wood-fired brick oven and entrées cooked in a (rarely found) coal-fired oven.

If early returns are any indication of long-term success, the Taphouse’s fast start and immediate popularity suggest a run of some duration.

It’s a totally redone, large, open place with a milelong bar sitting under four large TVs. The bar is often several folks deep but also near some high-top tables. The dining area spreads out away from the bar and is smartly broken into sections so that the noise level is livable. There’s big art on the walls, an open kitchen and a very friendly and attentive staff.

Full bar service is also available but, come on, they have 100 beers.

And while we’re at it, allow me to recommend the Bourbon Barrel Barney Flats. A stout aged in Wild Turkey barrels, it has hints of coffee, cream, vanilla and, of course, bourbon and is served in a bulb glass. It is a treat; unusual and unusually good.

A dining partner had Old Scratch Lager, a lighter, sweeter beer from Frederick, Md., and was pleased.

(A word of caution: the hand-out beer menu did not include prices. While the Old Scratch draft was a reasonable $5, the bourbon beer draft was $10. Not saying it wasn’t worth it. It was. I’m just offering a heads-up.)

There are roughly a dozen appetizers priced from $6 for the soup of the day to $13 for a slider sampler or $14 for a charcuterie plate, the latter two of which, trust me, is enough food to serve as a meal.

The sliders include an open-face meatball on crusty bread, lump crab cake and an aged burger with cheddar. The excellent charcuterie had very good prosciutto and beef, slabs of wonderful cheeses, razorthin crisp apple slices, olives and grapes and nicely toasted sliced baguette. It’s a great dish to share or have as dinner.

Other appetizers include housecut fries cooked in duck fat ($8), mussels with Tröegs Dreamweaver ($10), beer-battered onion rings with Russian dressing ($7), hummus with roasted eggplant and house-made breads ($8), smoked pork belly with figs and arugula ($10) and coal-fired wings ($12).

There are five salads, priced $8 or $9 — Caesar, mixed green, arugula, Bibb lettuce and chopped — all of which can be upgraded with a crab cake, steak, duck confit or grilled chicken.

Pizzas also are large, six slices, enough to share but I took half of mine home. Most are $12 or $13, though the duck confit with fig and arugula pie is $15.

There’s a prosciutto pie with roasted mushrooms, a Greek, a sausage, a margherita and a polpette (meatball and cheese).

I had a pesto pie with goat cheese, tomato and fire-roasted peppers. It was thin, crisp and tasty. And it went great with a second Bourbon Barrel Barney Flats.

There are sandwiches, too: pork with broccoli rabe, crab meat, roasted turkey, kielbasa or bratwurst, smoked chicken salad, burger with bacon, onion and pepper jack cheese — in other words, lots to choose from.

The entrées ranged from $18 for a sausage platter with sauerkraut and roasted potatoes to $28 for a New York strip steak with onion rings and veggies.

There was also roasted half-chicken, braised short ribs and wood-fired salmon served on a cedar plank with green beans and potato pancakes.

The Taphouse offers brunch on Sundays. The menu includes their regular pizzas and salads but also a nutella pizza with banana and berries, a smoked-fish pizza with cream cheese, onion, capers and cucumber and a breakfast pizza with sausage, cheese and eggs.

There are country-fried pork chops with gravy and home fries, a 7-ounce steak with poached eggs and home fries and breakfast burritos, baked oatmeal, french toast and wood-fired frittatas.

Oh, and I’d be remiss if I didn’t note that a breakfast side of housemade scrapple is available for just $3.

Federal Taphouse is a great example of casual dining in a casual setting offering unique beers and terrific food and attracting a multi-aged crowd. I expect it’ll enjoy success. And I suggest you plan a visit.

Cabinet is a six-piece, bluegrass-influenced Pennsylvania band with a heart for performing live. Their latest album, Leap, was recorded in the studio, but done in live takes with a live audience. Before that, the band released a live DVD / CD recorded November 11, 2011 at Harrisburg’s Abbey Bar. The CD set is called Eleven and captures Cabinet in the heart of their element.

Cabinet is built of Pappy Biondo [banjo, vocals], J.P. Biondo [mandolin, vocals], Mickey Coviello [acoustic guitar, vocals], Dylan Skursky [electric bass, double bass], Todd Kopec [fiddle, vocals], and Jami Novak [drums, percussion].

Pappy and J.P. Biondo are cousins, and are the main songwriters for the group. Along with guitarist Mickey Coviello they sat down to talk with Center Stage hosts Joe Ulrich and Cary Burkett about their music and the band. The concert comes from their live appearance at the Abbey Bar performed in front of a rambunctious sold out crowd.

The third class of Appalachian Trail Hall of Fame honorees will be inducted on Friday, June 7, at the annual Appalachian Trail Hall of Fame Banquet at the Allenberry Resort in Boiling Springs, Pennsylvania.

Honorees in the 2013 Appalachian Trail Hall of Fame class are Ruth Blackburn of Bethesda, Maryland, David Field of Hampden, Maine, David Sherman of Washington, D. C., David Startzell of Shepherdstown, West Virginia and Eddie Stone from Gainesville, Georgia.

Ruth Blackburn

During her 50 years of service to the Appalachian Trail and the Appalachian Trail Conference, Ruth Blackburn (1907-2004) was cited in 1983 by the U. S. Secretary of the Interior for being “the single most influential volunteer in shaping the successful National Park Service protection program.” In 1994, the National Conference on National Scenic and Historic Trails nominated Blackburn to the honor roll of people essential to the creation of the National Trails System.

David Field, 72, former chair of the Appalachian Trail Conference and past president of the Maine Appalachian Trail Club, was instrumental in major relocations of the Appalachian Trail in Maine that significantly improved one of the most important stretches of the trail. He also has worked to preserve the history of the Maine Appalachian Trail Club, writing a book on the trail in Maine as well as preserving thousands of photos and other archival records of the trail. Field has maintained a section of the Appalachian Trail since1954.

David Sherman, 69, helped garner new authorities and funding to complete protection of the Appalachian Trail corridor. After Congress enacted the 1978 Appalachian Trail amendments to the National Scenic Trails Act, he played a leadership role in securing the tracts of land necessary for preservation of the trail's scenic, ecological and cultural values. Sherman was acting manager of the Park Service Appalachian Trail Project Office, and later held the critical position of Deputy Chief of Land Acquisition for the Forest Service.

David Startzell, 63, served as assistant director and then director of the Appalachian Trail Conference (ATC) from 1978 to 2012 -- the longest serving executive director in the ATC's history. Under his stewardship more than 250,000 acres of public lands were protected along a 2,000-mile corridor. He secured nearly $200 million to enable acquisition of the corridor and for reinvigorating the Appalachian Trail Conference as a confederation and an organization structured to meet the obligations set forth 1984 by the National Park Service.

Everett (Eddie) Stone, founding president of the Georgia Appalachian Trail Club, was an assistant state forester at the time (late 1920s and early 1930s) who took it upon himself to lay out the southernmost section of the proposed Appalachian Trail and build it (and protect it) with agency and later Civilian Conservation Corps labor, brooking no opposition or contrary ideas. In 1934, he took a position with the National Park Service but continued his involvement as trail-committee leader—including fighting encroachment of roads on the Appalachian Trail.—until 1935.

Charter Class Hall of Fame honorees, elected in 2011, were Myron Avery, Gene Espy, Ed Garvey, Benton MacKaye, Arthur Perkins and Earl Shaffer. Members of the 2012 class were Emma “Grandma” Gatewood, David A Richie, J. Frank Schairer, Dr. Jean Stephenson and “Major” William Adams Welch.

Jim Foster, chair of the Appalachian Trail Hall of Fame selection committee, said a 6 p.m. reception will precede the dinner, which begins at 7 p.m. The cost of the reception and dinner is $30 for museum members and $40 for others.

Complete information on the Hall of Fame Banquet is available at http://atmbanquet2013.eventbrite.com/ Tickets may be purchased either at that website, or directly from the Appalachian Trail Museum by sending a check to:
Appalachian Trail Museum
1120 Pine Grove Road
Gardners, PA 17324

Appalachian Trail Hall of Fame inductees are honored in the Appalachian Trail Museum, which has had approximately 20,000 visitors from throughout the United States and 18 other countries since it opened in Pine Grove Furnace State Park in June 2010. Located at the midway point of the 2,184-mile-long Appalachian Trail, the museum is across from the Pine Grove General Store on Pennsylvania Route 233.

A guy walks into a bar car and…

From here the story could take many turns. When this guy is David Sedaris, the possibilities are endless, but the result is always the same: he will both delight you with twists of humor and intelligence and leave you deeply moved.

From the unique perspective of David Sedaris comes a new book of essays taking his readers on a bizarre and stimulating world tour. From the perils of French dentistry to the eating habits of the Australian kookaburra, from the squat-style toilets of Beijing to the particular wilderness of a North Carolina Costco, we learn about the absurdity and delight of a curious traveler’s experiences. Whether railing against the habits of litterers in the English countryside or marveling over a disembodied human arm in a taxidermist’s shop, his father’s dinnertime attire (shirtsleeves and underpants), his first colonoscopy (remarkably pleasant), and the time he considered buying the skeleton of a murdered Pygmy. Sedaris takes us on side-splitting adventures that are not to be forgotten.

A new collection of essays from the #1 New York Times bestselling author who has been called “the preeminent humorist of his generation” (Entertainment Weekly).

With Let’s Explore Diabetes with Owls, David Sedaris shows once again why his work has been called “hilarious, elegant, and surprisingly moving” (Washington Post).
