Ben E. Detrick

Ben Detrick grew up in the York area. Born into a musical family, he starting taking private violin lessons from a very early age.

When he was in the 7th grade, his music teacher, Collette Wickard, put him into a string quartet with three of her other students.

Two years later in 2002, the quartet of young students auditioned and were accepted to appear on the NPR showcase for outstanding young classical musicians, From the Top. Clips from his appearance on the show can be heard in the audio interview above.

While still in high school, Detrick went on to audition and be accepted into the York Symphony Orchestra. He performed with the orchestra until he left for college at Vanderbilt University's Blair School for Music in Nashville.

Detrick is currently the Middle and High School Strings Director at the American International School in Vienna, Austria.

But, he'll be returning to his hometown of York, PA to appear once again in a broadcast of From the Top -- this time as an alumni of the show. The York Symphony Orchestra will be performing as well, accompanying performances by the young musicians on the show.

The program will be taped before a live audience on Saturday, April 15 at 4 pm at the Strand Capitol Performing Arts Center. Tickets are available at the York Symphony Orchestra website.
