The Curio Theatre Company in Philadelphia is presenting an original play based on the story of Reverend Frank Schafer. In 2007, the Lebanon County United Methodist Pastor officiated at the same-sex marriage of his gay son. For that he was disciplined by the denomination and removed from service in 2013. Then in 2014 Reverend Schafer had his ministerial credentials reinstated by a United Methodist regional appeals committee.

The Matter of Frank Schaefer is by Philadelphia based playwrights Paul Kuhn and Tim Martin, who interviewed Schaefer several times, heard him preach and studied his media interviews. The play was written with the support of Reverend Schaefer.

The premiere performance of the work will take place in Reverend Schafer's own community, in Miller Chapel at Lebanon Valley College at 7 p.m. on Saturday November 8. The production opens in Philadelphia on November 12 and runs through December 6.
