"What people know as The Wizard of Oz on film today is not always what it was planned to be," says Jay Scarfone. He and William Stillman, both residents of Central Pennsylvania, are co-authors of The Wizard of Oz: The Official 75th Anniversary Companion. In 75 years, the film has gone from its 1939 theatrical release to yearly telecasts and into the collective consciousness of America.
Scarfone and Stillman created the book in cooperation with Warner Bros. and it's filled with rare photos and insights into various incarnations the film went through including changes to casting and directors. "The Wizard of Oz is one of those films that have been mined in terms of images that have been reproduced over and over again and information that has been repeated," says Stillman. "It is nothing short a minor miracle that we were able to uncover not only the information that we did but the extraordinarily rare, one-of-a-kind imagery that is proliferating throughout the entire book."
The two will be giving a lecture at the Harrisburg Art Association on Sunday, April 6 at 2pm. Their talk will include a history of the film including visuals from the book but also images they weren't able to include.
