The Friendship Heart Gallery in downtown Lancaster is presenting its 13th annual Art Auction on Friday, February 28. The event is the primary fundraising effort to support the gallery’s outreach of offering art classes to adults with developmental and intellectual disabilities.

The students are referred to the gallery classes by Lancaster County Behavioral Health and Developmental Services. Classes are held weekdays and evenings, offering a chance for the students with disabilities to pursue the creation of art and develop skills to express themselves.

The Heart Gallery is located at Steeple View Lofts, 118 North Water Street in Lancaster. Art created by the students from the classes is on display alongside work by professional artists.  The students earn a commission for any of their art that is sold in the gallery.

The gallery is an outgrowth of the work of Friendship Community, a Christian-based nonprofit organization which serves adults with developmental and intellectual disabilities. The main office is in Litiz, PA, but they have established 27 group homes in the region in various residential settings in Lancaster and Lebanon Counties

The Art Auction features works by a number of local professional artists who have contributed their work to be auctioned alongside some of the work of the Heart Gallery students. This year, local artists include Freiman Stolzfus, Lancaster Galleries, Richard Lawrence, Velma Magill, Martha Newswanger and several others. The signature painting for the event is a collaboration between Liz Hess of Liz Hess Gallery and Amy Myers, one of the Friendship Heart Gallery student artists. The auction will be held at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church starting at 6 p.m. on February 28.

Below you can hear our audio feature on the gallery, and also view a video about the gallery and the auction.
