"New materials come out of a manufacturing process and [they're] kind of just that material," says Patrick Sells of Salvaging Creativity in York. "Whatever inherent beauty or quality the materials have is standardized. There's no real depth to them other than that surface value."

Patrick's business is finding old things, parts, pieces of machinery, and repurposing them into anything from conference tables, reception desks, bike racks and art. When many towns and cities look to reinvent their identity, Patrick's work with Salvaging Creativity seeks to take the identity that a place already has and build upon it by creating works that include the past and its stories.

"Somebody spent many years of their life moving this arm of this machine," he says, "or tightening this bracket or rounding this nut off or driving this rivet to assemble this machinery component and when you selectively take out those pieces and incorporate them into something else I think in someway it retains that story or at least that mystery that someone can wonder [about]."

Salvaging Creativity has contributed to Creativity Unleashed which includes bike racks and planters. They've also done sculptural signage for the York County Economic Development Council and The Reid Menzer Memorial Skate Park.
