Opening Night of Destination Arts in Waynesboro, PA.

Walking down Main Street in Waynesboro, Andrew Sussman was struck by both the beauty of the town, but also by all the abandoned storefronts. He envisioned them being put to better use while they were unoccupied.

Andrew is co-president of the Arts Alliance of Greater Waynesboro and co-chairmen of Destination Arts.

"Destination Arts is this incredibly exciting project that we've implemented in downtown Waynesboro," Andrew says. "In just over 30 days we have converted and transformed seven vacant stores into art galleries. And at the same time we have another 9 storefronts that are filled with art, over 800 pieces of art, from about 75 different artists."

The idea is to encourage people to spend time downtown. In addition to art, there are numerous other events happening each week, and the hope is that this initiative helps strengthen the feeling of community in Waynesboro.

"I think there's a craving for people to regain that sense of community," he says. "That sense of having a neighbor and being able to sit across from that person and talk and have something to share locally is vitally important to us as human beings."
