Running a community-supported agriculture farm [CSA] isn't a job. It's a lifestyle. "During the growing season," says Steve Prescott of Hellam, owner of Prescott's Patch in Bainbridge, "I think we're embarrassed to say what our normal work week hour-wise is. I mean people would be appalled by that."
CSA's are like subscriptions to fresh, locally-grown produce. Members pay a sum of money up-front and then stop by the farm once a week for about twenty-three weeks to pick up their weekly share of what's being harvested at the moment.
CSA's and growers of organic food know what long hours are. Between planting, weeding, harvesting and boxing up produce, there's not much time left for anything else. And yet Steve and his colleague Lynn Malinak of Bainbridge are all smiles and laughing on a Friday afternoon as locals stop by to pick up their shares.
"I think the main thing for me is how the land is cared for here," says Sylvia Lehman of Elizabethtown. She and her husband Bob are members of the CSA at Prescott's Patch. "Steve is a marvelous steward of the land that he has. It's treated well and with respect and that has a lot to do with how the food tastes."
