Pennsylvania Poets Gather to Read Poems at the State Capitol

Written by Cary Burkett, Arts & Culture Desk and WITF Host | Sep 20, 2012 8:58 AM

A number of poets from around the state will gather in the East Wing/ Rotunda at the state capitol on October 11 to read their poetry in honor of Pennsylvania. The family-friendly event will take place from noon to 1:30 p.m., featuring poems about Pennsylvania’s history, people, culture and environment. Pennsylvania First Lady Susan Corbett is scheduled to attend.  The free event is open to the public.

Jerry Wemple, who teaches Creative Writing at Bloomsburg University and Marjorie Maddox who teaches Creative Writing at Lock Haven University, will be two of the poets participating. Together they have edited a book which collects poems from many different poets throughout the state entitled Commonwealth: Contemporary Poets on Pennsylvania. The book, along with other books by Pennsylvania poets, will be available at the event.

Other poets participating include Melanie Simms, a former Poet Laureate of Perry County, Nathaniel Gadsden, a former Poet Laureate of Harrisburg, and David Bauman from Northumberland, producer of the Dad Poet Blog.

Below you can hear our interview with some of the poets involved, and also listen to recordings of poets reading some of their own pieces.
