The Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA) celebrated the best in electronic journalism on October 10, 2011 as it presented 95 Edward R. Murrow Awards to 62 news organizations at its annual awards dinner at the Grand Hyatt in New York in front of over 400 journalists and guests.
For the fourth time since 2007, witf was honored with a National Edward R. Murrow Award by the RTDNA. Former Multimedia News Director Scott Gilbert's story on beep baseball, a game designed to allow visually impaired players to take the diamond, was named Best Sports Feature in the Small Market Radio category. It topped stories from 13 other regions. Audio Engineer Casey Houtz also has earned recognition for his editing work on the story.
witf is the only media organization in Pennsylvania to be recognized by RTDNA on the national level. "It's humbling to be mentioned among the nation's best in broadcast and digital journalism, but in the end, it's about making sure we are serving our community. Public service is our number one priority," says witf's Multimedia News Director Tim Lambert. Since 2006, witf has earned four national Murrow awards and 18 regional Murrow honors (six in 2011).
NPR earned four national Murrows in the network radio category, including Website, Audio Investigative Reporting (Home of Nursing Home: America's Empty Promise to Give the Elderly and Disabled a Choice) and Audio Reporting: Hard News (The Foreclosure Nightmare).
“It is important that we honor the excellent journalism produced everyday by creative, determined journalists,” said RTDNA Chairman Kevin Benz. “The challenges are great and pressures sometimes overwhelming but these honorees, and those at the regional level as well prove that great journalism still, as Murrow said years ago, enlightens, educates and protects our society."
RTDNA has been honoring outstanding achievements in electronic journalism with the Edward R. Murrow Awards since 1971. Murrow Award recipients demonstrate the excellence that Edward R. Murrow made a standard for the electronic news profession.
