At a gala ceremony on September 24, 2011 in Philadelphia, witf received two Emmy Awards for outstanding achievement from the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, Mid-Atlantic Chapter. Each of witf’s two nominations was selected as a winner this year.
In the category of Health Program or Special, the witf production of HealthSmart: Mysteries of the Teenage Mind was honored for work by producer/host Keira McGuire and executive producer Cara Fry. It was HealthSmart's sixth nomination but first win. HealthSmart has been sponsored by Capital Blue Cross since its premiere season.
Nell McCormack Abom was recognized in the individual achievement category of On-Camera Talent for her work as Program Host/Moderator of witf’s TV Smart Talk, which has been on the air since 1999. It was Abom’s four nomination and first win. TV SmartTalk is sponsored by PPL.
"I am proud and honored to be recognized by my peers for my work on Smart Talk. I am grateful to our great team of professionals at witf, our sponsors and our viewers for their support. This Emmy is testament to our commitment to news and public affairs excellence," Abom said.
“Two for two this year is wonderful news,” according to Kathleen Pavelko, witf’s President & CEO. “Our donors and corporate sponsors make the fine work of our journalists possible.” The awards were the first wins for witf since 1998, though witf has been nominated 20 times since 2005.
