Our Story
WITF FM 89.5 is home to the only public radio newsroom exclusively reporting on
Central Pennsylvania. Our philosophy is that every hometown ought to be served
by public radio. With that in mind, we focus not only on Harrisburg, Lancaster,
Lebanon and York, but also Reading, plus midstate communities large and small
across Adams, Berks, Cumberland, Dauphin, Franklin, Juniata, Lancaster, Lebanon,
Mifflin, Northumberland, Perry, Schuylkill, Snyder, Union and York counties, and
the parts of Centre, Chester, Columbia and Montour counties and northern
Maryland that receive our over-the-air signal.
WITF FM carries NPR's Morning Edition, Fresh Air, All Things Considered and Weekend Edition, plus Marketplace and the Marketplace Morning Report from PRI. We see our newscasts as shorter, regional versions of the national newsmagazines. When we update top stories, the emphasis is as much on why as what, and we mix the hour-to-hour headlines with more thorough reports on agriculture, the arts, diversity, the economy, education, the environment, family issues, government and politics, health, public safety, science, transportation, and the workplace.
Our Affiliations
WITF FM is a affiliate of the nonprofit Associated Press, the world's oldest and largest newsgathering organization. In fact, we're one of The AP's primary points of contact for Central PA and contribute hundreds of stories to the Pennsylvania broadcast wires each year. In 2001, we were proud to accept an instant citation from The AP for alerting the service to news of arrests in the 1969 York race riots murder of Lillie Belle Allen.
Traffax road reports are provided by Metro Networks, whose midstate offices in New Cumberland can be reached at 717/774-8150. Call 717/774-TIPS if you have a
traffic tip.
WITF News includes reports from the WITF-owned Radio PA Networks. The Radio Pennsylvania newsroom can be reached at 717/221-2883, and news releases of statewide interest can be e-mailed both to radiopa@radiopa.com and news@witf.org.
Public Radio Capitol News is a WITF FM service originating from the newsroom at the state Capitol. Affiliates include WHYY Philadelphia, WDUQ Pittsburgh, WDIY Allentown-Bethlehem, WVIA Scranton-Wilkes-Barre, WPSU State College and WQLN Erie. Reach Bureau Chief Damon Boughamer at 717/238-3586 or e-mail.
We receive reports from and contribute to the Great Lakes Radio Consortium, an environmental news service for public radio stations in the Northeast and Midwest.
WITF FM maintains professional affiliations with Public Radio News Directors Incorporated and the Radio and Television News Directors Association and adheres to the PRNDI Code of Ethics and the RTNDA Code of Ethics. (Really! Both of these documents are on our wall.) WITF FM is a also a member of the Pennsylvania Association of Broadcasters.
