170 million. That’s a big, big number.
It’s the number of Americans who watch, listen to or use public media each month. You’re one in 170 million, and so am I. And I want you to know about witf’s participation in a project that’s bringing America’s public radio and public television stations together. It’s a national, grassroots effort to rally the support of the 170 million Americans who watch, listen to or use public media each month. We believe this effort is vitally important given the fact that public broadcasting will once again be under attack when Congress reconvenes next month.
170 Million Americans for Public Broadcasting is using America’s public broadcasting system (some 1,300 non-profit, community-based radio and television stations) to create a network of the members, viewers and listeners who value a strong public media as a source of non-partisan news, local cultural programming and non-commercial educational programs.
The heart of the project is a web site – 170MillionAmericans.org – that gives supporters of public media a way to register their support and to put that support into action. Please check out the site and register to connect to this important effort. Use your Facebook and Twitter networks to get out the word, too.
We’ve joined this campaign because we take the threat to public media very seriously. Federal funding amounts to approximately 9% of our annual revenue, nearly $1.3 million dollars each year. Losing this crucial source of general operating support would be a major blow to our organization. No government funding sources will be used in this effort.
This is an exciting project that will require the support of each of witf’s valuable users. Only together can we make our case and win the fight! So don’t wait, sign up at 170millionAmericans.org today!
As ever,
